She is wearing a crown (hence the &###x201C;Coronet&###x201D; nickname) with the inscription &###x201C;LIBERTY&###x201D; displayed prominently. Thirteen stars (as a reference to the thirteen original American colonies) appear at the periphery. The coin&###x2019;s date appears at the bottom. This motif first debuted in 1838 and, remarkably, remained in use until 1907. The bird wears a shield and is clutching arrows and an olive branch in its talons. This imagery represented America&###x2019;s desire for peace, combined with its ability to defend itself in war.
