1861 US Civil War Era Gold $1 Coin, Type 3, LG Indian Princess Head Gold Dollar
Type 3, large head Indian Princess Gold Dollar struck by the United States Mint. These gold dollars were struck during the United States Civil War (1861 – 1865). Due to an executive order in 1933 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, coins of this era became much rarer, with many of them being melted down. The obverse of the coin is commonly described as an Indian Princess. However, historians have suggested that the design is based on the Crouching Venus statue in the Philadelphia museum, with a headdress added. Minting years: 1861 – 1865.
