Mattathias Antigonus, the last of the Hasmoneans, was a unique personality. In the wake of the Hasmonean civil war, he had been taken to Rome, but escaped in 55 B. Here has was caught and again sent back by Gabinius, the Roman governor of Syria. In Rome, he was freed and became a priest with Antipater as High Advisor. The latter purposely undermined Hyrcanus rule with the aim of replacing him on the throne of Judea with his own son, Herod. Mattathias attempted a coup detat with the aid of his brother-in-law, Ptolemy Mennaeus, but was defeated by Herod. His second attempt, with the help of the Paerthians in 40 B. Mattathias held sway in Judea but was involved in constant warfare with Herod until 37 B. Mattathias was the last Hasmonean king. His struggle finds expression in his coins, as he was the only one of his dynasty to make serious changes in the Hasmonean coin types. Not only did he issue large values, he also struck coins with purely Jewish symbols, such as the Table of Shewbread and the Menorah.
