This is the sixth release of the Series I 12-Coin series, an exclusive Year of the Snake coin from Perth Mint containing one troy ounce of. 9999 pure 24-karat gold. Each coin comes in a protective plastic capsule. The Australian Lunar Gold Coin Series reached its sixth annual release with the 2001 Year of the Snake Gold Coins. By this point, the popularity of the 99.99% pure gold offerings had increased, lending towards higher sales levels and an expansion of the range of bullion offerings. The 2001 Year of the Snake features an image of a snake curling around a tree branch surrounded by the traditional beaded border. The inscriptions include the Chinese character for snake within the right field and the date within the left field. An indication of the precious metal weight and purity appears below. As typical, the portrait of Her Royal Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley appears on the obverse of the coin with inscriptions “Australia” and “Elizabeth II” along with the 100 DOLLARS? Denomination. The date range for this Year of the Snake ran from January 24, 2001 to February 11, 2002. According to Chinese Astrology, those born under the influence of this sign are believed to be wise, intelligent, graceful, independent, analytical, and charming. They are believed to be natural leaders with courage and determination. The gold bullion coin options for this year included one kilogram, ten ounce, and two ounce coins with unlimited mintages. Coins with limited mintages included the one ounce, one-quarter ounce, one-tenth ounce, and one-twentieth ounce sizes. For only the second time within the series to date, the one ounce size reached its full maximum mintage of 30,000 pieces. Silver products, and some gold as well, may exhibit milk spots, and/or toning, which are normal and do not change the condition described in the listing, nor the value of the product. Coins that are holdered by one of the major grading companies are graded based on the condition they were in at the time of grading. However, at times, coins do tend to develop spotting or toning which are a normal happenstance in coins. Please keep in mind, the appearance of the toning and/or milk spots does not mean that the coin is not the grade specified on the actual slab. In instances where there is a discrepancy where the customer believes to be unjust, please refer to the grading companys guarantee policy. Both NGC and PCGS have a program where they will compensate the owner of the current coin if they believe the coin deserves a lower grade than it had originally received.
