Obverse: Diademed and draped bust of Dona Maria II left. Dater (1834) flanked by stars below. Reverse: Crowned coat-of-arms of the Kindom of Portugal within wreath. Maria II (4 April 1819 15 November 1853) “the Educator” Portuguese. Or “the Good Mother” Portuguese. , reigned as Queen of Portugal from 1826 to 1828, and again from 1834 to 1853. Born in Rio de Janeiro, she was the first child of Emperor Pedro I of Brazil and his first wife, Empress Maria Leopoldina and thus a member of the House of Braganza. One of the two surviving children born when Pedro was still heir apparent to Portugal, she inherited Portuguese titles and was placed in the line of succession to the former Portuguese throne, even after becoming a member of the Brazilian Imperial Family, from which she was excluded in 1835 after her definitive ascension to the Portuguese throne. Peter III (or Pedro III , 5 July 1717 25 May 1786) became King of the Kingdom of Portugal and the Algarves by the accession of his wife and niece Queen Maria I in 1777, and co-reigned alongside her until his death. Peter was the younger son of John V of Portugal and Maria Anna of Austria. Peter was a younger brother of Joseph I of Portugal. Their maternal grandparents were Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor, and Eleonor Magdalene of Neuburg, sister of Queen Maria Sofia of Portugal. Peter married Maria, Princess of Brazil, in 1760, at which time she was the heiress-apparent to the throne then held by his brother Joseph I. According to custom, Peter thus became prince of Brazil in right of his wife. They had six children, of whom the eldest surviving son succeeded Maria as John VI on her death in 1816. See also names in other languages; May 13, 1717 November 29, 1780 was the Archduchess regnant of Austria, Queen regnant of Hungary, Croatia and Bohemia, and a Holy Roman Empress by marriage. Maria Theresa helped initiate financial and educational reforms, promoted commerce and the development of agriculture, and reorganized the army, all of which strengthened Austria’s resources. Continued conflict with the Kingdom of Prussia led to the Seven Years’ War and later to the War of the Bavarian Succession. She became dowager empress after the death of her husband Francis I, Holy Roman Emperor and accession of her son Joseph as emperor in 1765. Maria Theresa criticised many of Joseph’s actions but agreed to the First Partition of Poland (1772). A key figure in the power politics of 18th century Europe, Maria Theresa brought unity to the Habsburg Monarchy and was considered one of its most capable rulers.
