The latter purposely undermined Hyrcanus rule with the aim of replacing him on the throne of Judea with his own son, Herod. Mattathias attempted a coup detat with the aid of his brother-in-law, Ptolemy Mennaeus, but was defeated by Herod. His second attempt, with the help of the Paerthians in 40 B. Mattathias held sway in Judea but was involved in constant warfare with Herod until 37 B. Mattathias was the last Hasmonean king. His struggle finds expression in his coins, as he was the only one of his dynasty to make serious changes in the Hasmonean coin types.
