The United States’ official gold bullion coin, the Gold American Eagle, was first released in 1986. Today, it comes in tenth-ounce, quarter-ounce, half-ounce and one-ounce forms. The Gold American Eagle was authorized by the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985 and is now one of the world’s most popular gold bullion coins. Government guarantees that each coin includes the amount of actual gold weight, in Troy ounces, on the back of the coin. Though predominantly gold, the coin is much more wear-resistant than coins with a gold purity of at least 99.9 percent. This strengthening is due to the addition of copper and silver, which helps make it more resistant to stuffs than other bullion. The gold, as required by law, originates from sources in the United States. The coin’s obverse depicts the full-length figure of Lady Liberty. Her hair is flowing and she holds in her right hand a torch. In her left hand she holds an olive branch, a traditional symbol of peace. The Capitol Building, home to the United States Congress, can also be seen in the background to the left. This design actually debuted on the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle coin. Mint between 1907 and 1933 and takes its name from Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the sculptor who was originally responsible for the design. That coin has often been considered among the most beautiful U. Issued coins, making this Liberty design an obvious one to revive in 1986. The Gold American Eagle’s reverse design comes instead from the monumental sculptor Miley Tucker-Frost. It portrays a male eagle clasping an olive branch as it flies above a nest with a female eagle and two hatchlings. A bald eagle is iconic as the national bird of the United States. In most instances, the face value of a Gold American Eagle is proportional to its weight. A weight of 1.0909 Troy oz. The design of the American Buffalo gold bullion coin is a modified version of James Earle Fraser’s design for the Indian Head nickel (Type 1), issued in early 1913. Fraser grew up in Winona, Minnesota. The frontier influence of his youth is evident in his designs as an artist and sculptor, including the Indian Head nickel. After a raised mound of dirt below the animal on the reverse was reduced, the Type 2 variation continued to be minted for the rest of 1913 and every year until 1938; except for 1922, 1932, and 1933 when no nickels were struck. The obverse (front) of the coin depicts a Native American, whom Fraser said he created as a mixture of the features of three chiefs from different American Indian tribes, Big Tree, Iron Tail, and Two Moons. The obverse also shows the motto “LIBERTY” on the top right, the year of mintage on the bottom left, and below that the letter F for Fraser. The reverse (back) of the coin stands an American Bison, which commonly are referred to as buffalo. The animal depicted on the reverse is believed by most to be the bison named Black Diamond, who lived in the New York City Central Park Zoo during the 1910’s. Each coin contains 1 oz of pure 24 karat gold. They are legal tender with content and purity guaranteed by the U. Mint enjoys a long history of producing beautiful coins like the Gold American Buffalo coin. The framers of the constitution understood the need for the new Republic to have a monetary system. In 1904, President Theodore Roosevelt suggested that American coinage needed to be redesigned so that it would rival those of ancient Greece and Rome. This brought about the creation of the elegant Buffalo Nickel, which celebrates the history of the United States with a design that includes two of the countrys most distinctive inhabitants. As part of Roosevelts drive to beautify American coinage, the sculptor James Earle Fraser designed the Indian Head Nickel which replaced Charles E Barber’s Liberty Head design. Fraser’s designs were initially approved in 1912, but objections from the Hobbs Manufacturing Company meant that its release was delayed until February 1913. The initial coins were subject to wear, which meant that both the design and dates were easily worn away; but it was not until 1938 that the design was replaced by the Jefferson nickel designed by Felix Schlag. Frasers coin has come to be known as one of the best designs in U. Coinage and was also used on the 2001 Smithsonian commemorative coin. This American Buffalo bullion is based on Frasers creation. The obverse of the Gold American Buffalo bullion is engraved with a portrait of a Native American with feathers in his hair, a piece that Fraser created drawing inspiration from three different Indian chiefs who posed as models for him to sketch. This side also features the motto “LIBERTY” on the top right as well as the year of mintage on the bottom left and below that the letter “F” for Fraser. On the reverse of the coin stands the American bison, more commonly known as the buffalo, standing on a mound of dirt. When the design for the nickel was first issued in 1913, this mound of dirt was more raised. Since then it has been reduced, creating a type 2 variation of the coin. The American Buffalo coin is similar to the nickel in that it bears the American motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM” above the buffalos lower back and “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” along the top. 9999 FINE GOLD” rather than the nickels “FIVE CENTS, ” and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST can now be seen under the buffalos head. Gold American Buffalo bullion was introduced by the U. Mint on June 22, 2006, and this was the first time that the United States Government minted pure 24 karat gold coins for the public. Due to the incredible popularity of this coin combined with an increase in the price of gold since the release, it is now considered to be worth a lot more – which makes it a great investment. On July 22, 2006, the mint transferred two of the coins to the Smithsonian Institution because of their historical value. Fulfillment of this coin is based on availability and no exact date can be guaranteed. Eligible for Precious Metals IRA. Contains one troy ounce of. Weight and purity guaranteed by U.
