Vintage item, it is unavoidable. And it is satisfactory to use. This is a lovely item to own or to give as a special gift. According to ancient Greek mythology, Athena was the daughter of Zeus and his first wife, Metis, whose name meant wisdom. Metis warned Zeus that their first son would be more powerful than Zeus himself, which agitated Zeus so much that when Metis became pregnant he swallowed whole Metis and their unborn child. This gave him a headache, which he cured by splitting his head open with an ax. Zeus may have been powerful but he wasn’t necessarily smart. From the wound came forth Athena, fully grown. The owl is Athena’s attribute or mascot. According to the mythology, Athena at times also took the very form of her owl. This elegant and classic necklace features an ancient coin that many consider to be “the ancient coin”. It is an ancient Greek silver tetradrachm , minted in ATTICA, Athens. The front of the coin shows Athenas owl- with an olive sprig on one side, and the three Greek letters AOE on the other side- which was the symbol for Athens. This coin is in beautifulcondition- down to every detail- so crisp and raised. It is also very centered. The back as been left open so you can see the lovely profile of the otherworldly Athena. I have set this beauty in a bezel of 18 kt gold- hugging each crevice and edge, and it has a frame that is textured, back plate and bale all of solid 18 kt gold. There are two options for hanging: the first is a gorgeous strand of faceted natural blue sapphires- they are graduated in size and a fabulous color.
