Obverse Designed by Chief Engraver James Barton Longacre, the obverse was inspired by the ancient Greco-Roman sculpture Crouching Venus. It features a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty wearing a pearl-studded diadem inscribed with the word &###x201C;LIBERTY. &###x201D; You&###x2019;ll also find the year of issue on this side. Reverse Modeled after the Great Seal of the United States, the reverse features a heraldic eagle with a striped shield on its breast. Thirteen stars rest above to represent the original colonies. Liberty Head Double Eagles were minted in three slight variations between 1849 and 1907 in Philadelphia, San Francisco, New Orleans, Carson City, and Denver.
