This is the fifth portrait of Her Majesty to grace UK coinage during her long reign as a British monarch. In 2018, Her Majesty’s portrait has been enhanced by a new guilloche design. “ELIZABETH II” is inscribed, along with the coin’s denomination. Reverse Britannia, the female embodiment of Great Britain, stands tall on the reverse, designed by Philip Nathan. She holds Poseidon’s trident in one hand and a shield and olive branch in the other. The name Britannia is based on Greek and Roman geographical terms. This version of the Britannia coin also features an ornate border in a traditional oriental style. Inscriptions include “BRITANNIA” and the coin’s weight, purity, and year of issue.
